Troubleshooting Guide

Ensure optimal performance with these troubleshooting tips.

Operating Sounds

What does normal operation typically sound like?

A steady, consistent humming indicates the mixer is functioning properly.

Cavitation or gurgling sounds

The mixer is being starved of liquid which usually means an air lock in pipework or a vortex in the vessel. Check for air locks or incorrect return piping.

Unusual noises during startup

If the shaft won’t rotate freely or makes unexpected sounds, your pipework might be putting stress on the mixer. Check the inlet alignment and relieve any mechanical strain.

Liquid Rising Into the Hopper

Liquid enters the hopper while the mixer is running

This may indicate excessive back pressure or insufficient mixer speed. Check for outlet restrictions and verify that the mixer is operating at full power to maintain forward flow during powder addition.

Liquid rises into the hopper when the mixer is off

Backflow can occur if the powder valve is left open after shutdown. The valve should only be open while the mixer is running and powder is being added. Keeping it closed at all other times helps prevent liquid from flowing up into the hopper.

Powder Not Flowing Properly

Powder sticking to the hopper walls

Moisture is the enemy here. Make sure that hopper is bone dry before adding powder, even small amounts of moisture will cause powder to stick and restrict flow.

Powder is tunneling or “rat-holing” in the hopper

This effect occurs when powder forms voids instead of flowing smoothly. Gently tap the hopper or use a plastic spatula to help stubborn powders along.

Poor Mixing Performance

Low flow in the vessel

Verify that all valves are properly set and confirm that the mixer is running at maximum speed if controlled by an inverter.

Foaming and aeration issues

This usually happens when air gets into the system. Make sure the return pipe is submerged below the liquid surface, and double-check that the powder feed valve is closed when not actively adding powder.

Maintain top performance with genuine Silverson parts and accessories.
